A Proven Advocate for Henderson-Massey

Bringing experience, compassion, and community commitment to the Local Board.

Kia ora, I'm Susan

I’m Susan Diao, and I’ve proudly called Henderson-Massey home for over a decade. I’m a long-time educator, a passionate community advocate, and a proud Labour supporter committed to inclusivity, equity, and sustainability.

A Life of Learning and Leading

I serve as a Senior Lecturer in Supply Chain Management at Manukau Institute of Technology, with over 11 years of teaching experience. Before entering academia, I worked in commercial logistics — managing challenges in manufacturing, transportation, and distribution.

While working full-time, I’m also pursuing my PhD — a testament to my dedication to lifelong learning and leadership.

Serving My Community Since 2009

Since 2009, I’ve supported residents in our area, especially Chinese-speaking community members who face language barriers.

In 2010, I proudly represented senior residents at the Henderson-Massey Local Board, which led to the creation of the Auckland Environmental Protection Association.

My service was recognised with the Community Volunteer Award in 2013 — an honour I hold close.

Building Connections Across Cultures

I actively support a range of ethnic and community organisations — including:

  • Auckland Environmental Protection Association
  • Henderson Chinese Association
  • Whānau Community Trust

My work has always focused on collaboration, cultural diversity, and ensuring everyone can access the resources they need to thrive.

Justice of the Peace & Labour Values

In 2020, I became a Justice of the Peace, offering help with legal and administrative matters for local residents.

I joined the Labour Party in 2021 because I believe in a future built on compassion, fairness, and equal opportunity for all — values that align deeply with my own.

Why I’m Standing for Local Board

I’m standing for the Henderson-Massey Local Board to continue what I’ve always done: serve this community with care, integrity, and a focus on real progress.

I want every resident to feel heard, supported, and empowered — whether it’s about sustainability, access to services, or cultural inclusion.

Together, we can build a vibrant, united, and forward-looking Henderson-Massey.
